Access content anywhere with your VPN access

With your personal VPN access, you can connect to the FHM network from anywhere. This allows you to access license-protected content such as books and specialist articles in the eLibrary from the university network.

This works by the VPN connection redirecting the internet traffic via a defined network and changing the public IP address. Websites and services can then use this IP address to recognize that you are activated for the service you have booked.

Here we explain how to obtain your personal VPN login details and set up the connection correctly.

How to get your VPN login details:

At the start of your studies, you will receive the login details for your VPN account by email. The user name corresponds to your matriculation number, the password is a four-digit PIN. If you have any connection problems, you can contact our IT support team at any time.

If you have misplaced or accidentally deleted the email, you can request your login details again via the University Computer Center. Open the University Computer Center page and then click on the "Request VPN again" button to receive your data.

Set up your VPN connection:

A VPN connection redirects Internet traffic via a defined network and changes the public IP address. Websites and services can use this IP address to recognize that you are activated for the service you have booked.

To set up your VPN connection, you must first download and install the FortiClient VPN tool. You can then enter the FHM connection data and log in with your personal access data.

Depending on which operating system you use, the individual steps along the way will vary slightly. Here you will find step-by-step instructions for setting up with Windows and macOS.

FAQ - frequently asked questions

In the e-mail with your personal login data, you will also receive an overview of the connection data. In the FortiClient VPN application, enter "SSL VPN" as the connection type. For the server address (remote gateway), enter the value vpn.fh-mittelstand.de. Now use the value 10443 as the port and confirm that the port should be adjusted (do not specify a certificate).

You can save your user name. You can find detailed instructions on how to set this up here.

If the connection is interrupted, the FHM server cannot be reached. This may be because you are in a company network that does not allow a VPN connection, for example. In this case, you can try contacting the local IT department.

Another possible cause could be that you have not set up the port correctly on vpn.fh-mittelstand.de. Check this once in your VPN settings.

If you are already connected to the university's Wi-Fi, you do not need a VPN connection.

It can happen that the mail with your access data is mistakenly recognized as spam. Please therefore also check your spam folder.
In exceptional cases, it may take longer than one working day to process your request. If you have not received a response after three working days, please contact our IT support. You can find the contact details at the bottom of the page.
